Another Artist: Black Drop Designs
In part of a larger series of events that I will eventually blog about, I was introduced by Ted Gowans to the super incredible work of Black Drop Designs just last night.
I went to art school, so I knew a lot of people who majored in some sort of jewelry creation or metalsmithing. I haven’t seen any of them take their work to the professional, working level of Black Drop. I love the super simple website and the Instagram-style photos used to showcase the pieces.
If you’re local to the Vancouver area, you can see all of these designs in person at various events and farmer’s markets. You can also read more about the process and concepts behind the work here.
My favorites are the crow earrings, that upon first glance look like tiny vials with miniature crows preserved inside.
I also really love the pieces that include photography from Paris and Amsterdam. They feel incredibly vintage and special in a way that makes me feel nostalgic, as if I’d been the one to take the photo in some forever-ago time. They evoke a majorly visceral response — something that I imagine it would be difficult to do with jewelry.
All of the pieces are majorly reasonable in price (around $20). This is especially great for custom jewelry that won’t match your co-worker’s identical Anthropology necklace or Forever 21 instant-break earrings.
I will definitely be ordering the crow earrings. Which ones are y’all into?
Most cool girls are totally fucked up because they are used to guys telling them they are “cool” or “funny” or “smart” and they assume it’s a euphemism for “not hot” because they already feel like dudes with boobs. But that’s okay because a hundred percent of cool guys are fucked up too and secretly feel like girls with dicks. Straight men are sooooooooo pink inside. They just can’t tell you or anyone, because they have been socialized expressly not to. But I just told you you, and now everybody knows.
